STEMconnector Webinar: Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community in STEM
As a part of Pride month which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, STEMconnector hosted a virtual event featuring leading organizations in this space - SMYAL and the Point Foundation. This discussion explored the landscape for youth and incumbent workers who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Kevin Wright, Chief of Staff at the Point Foundation, and Rebecca York, Director of Youth Development and Community Engagement at SMYAL, discussed these challenges and opportunities facing the LGBTQ+ community along with Ted Wells, STEMconnector's President. The conversation highlighted the impact of anti-trans legislation, the need for more representative data, and the importance of creating inclusive environments.
The discussion closed with presenters touching on the importance of partnerships with industry, as well as the crucial role of services like leadership development opportunities, after-school programs, counseling services, financial support, and mentoring, provided by organizations like SMYAL and Point Foundation.
